Karen’s Comments

Well, time for another Blog entry!
Alison has had me on my new program for 3 weeks now. I LOVE IT!!!
At first I thought there is no way I could do the circuit once, but I have already worked up to going through it twice in my hour work out. I always start on the treadmill for a 20 minute cardio….complete with hills and moving at 4.0 mph.
Then Alison gets me right into the more advanced exericises that are not only a great challenge, but
feel so good when I am finished them.
What a great coach Alison is!! I love the way she always counts down how many more presses or squats I need to do, & when she sees me straining she really encourages me to finish my set of 15. Alison has a way with words & really helps me to believe in myself that I can Do It, & I REALLY CAN!!
Alison is always checking my posture & positioning when I am lifting the weights or doing leg squats to ensure I am not straining my neck or lower back. She will use her hands on my shoulders or arms to keep them in the correct position. She has taught me the correct alignment for every exercise
& I now realise how often when I did try lifting weights in the past, that I was not getting the full benefits from my work out.
Alison still has me doing Jumping Jacks & skipping & like her newsletter says, it is a great work out (as much as I hate to admit it…I know I will be buying myself a skipping rope to keep my legs in shape!!)
Thanks Alison!!!

Karen’s New Workout!

Well, while Karen’s away on holidays this week, I’ll be writing a new workout program for her.

After two months, she’s ready! She’s going to love it (!!?) even though it will be a harder program. As I mentioned before, when you are working out, it’s important to make sure you progress your program, or you will find that you plateau. Your body adapts, so you need to step it up a little….this could be by simply increasing the intensity of your workout, or changing it up. Also, when you change it up, you have a new mental learning curve as well, so it won’t get boring!

I’ll let you know how she likes her new program….and I’m sure she will let you know her thoughts as well.

The importance of Vitamin D

Five Reasons You Need Vitamin D

Vitamin D is known as the “sunshine vitamin” because the body synthesizes it with exposure to sunlight. This fat-soluble hormone has important roles in the body, it:

  1. Helps to maintain normal blood levels of calcium and phosphorus.
  2. Assists in the absorption of calcium and promotes bone mineralization, which may prevent or slow the progression of osteoporosis.
  3. Strengthens the immune system and protects against a number of serious diseases, including rickets and osteomalacia.
  4. May provide protection from hypertension, psoriasis and several autoimmune diseases (including multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis).
  5. Plays a role in defending against cancer (studies link a deficiency of vitamin D to as many as 18 different cancers).

It isn’t easy to get enough vitamin D from your diet alone, though fortified foods (milk and cereals), eggs, salmon, tuna, mackerel and sardines are all good sources. Even if you receive regular sun exposure (for most of us 20-30 minutes a day is adequate), Dr. Weil recommends taking 1,000 IU of vitamin D per day.
