Hi Well, another year has passed and new one has begun! It seems each year just goes faster and faster! Have you made a New Years resolution to start an exercise program, or to get back into one? After all the holiday treats, it's time to get back to healthy eating, and a regular exercise program. It's also a time for reflection. For instance, what do you do when you feel discouraged or down about your life, or your work? On one of the occasions when I was feeling discouraged, a fellow trainer told me that when she feels discouraged, she thinks about what a difference she is making in people's lives. Whether it's one or ten or more, when she changes her thinking, she gets excited, and starts getting ideas, and wants to do more! Then I thought of a thank you note I received from a client, thanking me for gifting her with a free training session for Christmas. She referred to it as a gift toward her good health, and expressed her appreciation. Both what my fellow trainer said to me, and receiving this lovely note helps remind me that what I do makes a difference in people's lives, and that's something to be feel good about!

What are Carbohydrates anyway? In recent years, carbohydrates have been much maligned, and many people have come to fear eating them. Well, did you know that carbohydrates are the main energy source for our bodies? Carbohydrates come in two forms...simple and complex. Simple carbs consist of one to three units of sugar linked together, and have a sweet taste. Complex carbs can be hundreds or thousands of sugar units liked together, and they have a pleasant taste, but are not sweet. Complex carbs come in high fibre and low fibre, and are not digestible. These complex carbs are the healthiest choices for human nutrition, and can lower hypertension, cancer, arthritis, diabetes, etc. Whether a carb is simple or complex doesn't matter, because, after digestion they appear in the blood in a simple form called glucose, which is taken into the cells to be used for energy production. All the cells of our bodies have a built in energy factory called mitochondria, which produce ATP from the carbohydrates we eat. Carbohydrate also contain many nutrients that our bodies need for optimum health. So, the next time you go shopping for groceries, keep in mind that complex carbohydrates are found in whole foods such as fruits and vegetables, grains , and legumes. So, try to include these types of food in your diet more often, and try to reduce using processed food. |
