Fit Tip - Exercise and Bone Health

Calcium may not be the best way to protect your bones from osteoporosis. Research has found that women who use weight training as part of their regular exercise program have better bone mass, even if their calcium intake is lower. Think of your bones as if they were muscle...when you stress bone it will build strength just like muscle!
As most bone mass is built by the age of 30, it is important to make sure you start young! For those who were not active in their younger years, you can still protect your bone mass with proper diet and exercise that includes weight bearing activities such as walking, running, dancing, hiking etc.,at least 3-5 times per week, and making sure to include weight training at least 1-3 times per week. You should still make sure your calcium intake is adequate...about 1,000 to 1500 mg per day.
